What are waffles?
Waffles, just like pancakes, are types of griddlecakes or griddle breads. They are leavened with baking soda or baking powder and cooked on a hot non-stick griddle surface. For pancakes, it can be a hot flat griddle or a large sauteed pan. For waffles, a waffle make needs to be used in order to achieve such golden, delicious, deep-pocketed texture.
How many types of waffles are there?
Well, there are basically 2 types of waffles. The regular one which is mentioned in this easy homemade waffles recipe. And the Belgian ones. They are especially light and crisp because of the incorporation of whipped egg whites and/or yeast.
Regular homemade waffles are rich in flavor and have a light, delicious, moist interior with a little bit crispy exterior. You can simply achieve all of those characteristics in this easy waffles recipe.
What to served with waffles?
The beautiful thing about waffles is you technically can eat them with anything you like. Though waffles are usually served for breakfast or brunch; once a while they can be served as dessert. Fresh fruit, nuts, yogurt, ice cream, plain or flavored butter, honey, fruit compote, and syrup are one of the top choices.
Waffles variations and alternatives
- Buttermilk waffles - replace the same amount of milk to buttermilk then you have your buttermilk waffles

- Pancakes - classic pancakes are best alternatives to waffles or even better serve them together
- Vietnamese style hot dogs - not your regular hot dogs. These hot dogs are just like Belgian waffles which made with whipped egg white to achieve such light texture; and stuffed with cream cheese or your choice of stuffing.
Ingredients in this easy homemade waffles recipe
All ingredients in this recipe are common and easy to find in any grocery store. Such as:
- All purpose flour
- Salt & sugar
- Baking powder
- Egg
- Milk
- Unsalted butter
- Vanilla extract, optional.
Note for all purpose flour: Both Gold Medal Unbleached AP flour and Pillsbury Unbleached AP flour can deliver tender and soft texture for your waffles; which I would recommend you to use and what I was using to make these waffles. King Arthur Unbleached AP flour has a higher protein percentage compared to the other two which will result in a bit drier and chewier texture.
